Asphalt, also known as bitumen, or commonly called tar, is a sticky, black and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. However, general usage of the word "asphalt" often refers to asphalt concrete, or pavement, a mixture of construction aggregate and asphalt itself most commonly seen with street and driveway paving.
Tar & Chip Driveway
Tar & Chip, often referred to as “asphaltic surface treatment”, is the original paving style found on old country roads. A base layer of hot liquid asphalt is applied to the prepared surface and then stone – such as granite, slate and river rock depending on the look and requirements – is applied and rolled into the asphalt.

Did you know asphalt sealcoating is used because of its excellent waterproofing, flexibility, and adhesive properties to bind and hold the aggregates in the pavement? Asphalt has been used extensively for paving and road construction. Due to its waterproofing properties, asphalt protects the aggregates from absorbing water, thus preserving their strength and load-carrying capacities.
We start with Asphalt Surface Sealers, known as, Asphalt Sealcoating. Sealcoating can prevent your asphalt from being damaged cracks, water penetration, and oxidation. It seals the asphalt and protects it from water, vehicle oil and gasoline, and can reduce the frictions. Crack-filling would be completed prior to applying the sealcoat if needed. We recommend sealcoating about 1 year after freshly paved driveway or parking lots.
If you see a progressive change in the color of asphalt pavement from rich black to brown to gray it is time to call Tuscaloosa Asphalt. We can help you restore asphalt or repair asphalt back to a strong and stable road again.
